Q-Track Receives FCC Approval for First Near-Field Electromagnetic Ranging RFID Tag

Atlanta, Georgia April 7, 2009 -

FCC LogoThe Q-Track Corporation has received FCC approval for the first real-time location system (RTLS) based on Near-Field Electromagnetic Ranging (NFER®) technology. Making its commercial debut at the 2009 RFID Journal Live Conference at the end of April, NFER® RTLS represents a fundamental breakthrough in indoor wireless tracking. NFER® RTLS is a low frequency (~1MHz), narrowband, near-field wireless system – polar opposite to the traditional high frequency or microwave tracking technologies that dominate today’s RTLS offerings. Q-Track’s innovative system has been recognized as a Finalist for the “Best in Show” Award by a panel of judges selected by the editors of RFID Journal.

Q-Track’s NFER® RTLS is a comprehensive active-RFID solution comprising Tag Transmitters, Locator-Receivers, a Location Server, and Q-Track's core software suite. Q-Track’s QTTM-500 system is a fifth generation near-field electromagnetic ranging location system capable of providing 30cm-1m (1-3ft) location accuracy at ranges of 20-60m (60-200ft) depending on the environment. Operating under Part 15 power levels in the AM broadcast band (~1MHz), the long wavelengths have superior propagation in cluttered, difficult industrial settings.

The launch application for NFER® RTLS is in a simulated radiation dosimeter training system for the nuclear industry. This system helps nuclear utilities train their workers to minimize radiation exposure, and reduce utility costs. NFER® RTLS provide accurate, real-time location information in industrial environments where that information would previously have been cost prohibitive. Southern Company’s Plant Vogtle nuclear facility has been beta-testing a pilot installation of Q-Track’s fifth generation QTTM-500 system since November 2008. Longer term markets include worker safety and location (in the nuclear, chemical, and mining industries), as well as supply chain management.
